In this final issue of the Heritage India Keepsake Collection, we are going on a journey of the River Ganga, the holy river of the Hindus. The first issue traced the journey of the Indus and it’s only fitting that we unearth the story of the River Ganga in the final one.

The journey of the river begins at the Mount Shivling, through the Gangotri glacier, in Uttarakhand in the peaks in the western Garhwal Himalaya. Located at the end of the glacier is Gomukh, named so because of its resemblance to the mouth of a cow. Here, the river emerges, as Bhagirathi. Along the river are many pilgrimage destinations like Kankhal, Rishikesh and Devprayag, where Bhagirathi meets the Alaknanda to be henceforth known as ‘Ganga’. The pages ahead offer extensive and considerable knowledge about the life of and around the great river.
