The Tale of a Merchant’s house


Zawar is situated in the picturesque Arawalli ranges, some forty kilometers southwest of Udaipur, in Rajasthan. This far away town not only hosts huge zinc producing industries today but used to do so hundreds of years ago as well.

These make up the oldest existing large scale set of Hindu temples in stone, revealing developing styles and materials. Created a thousand years ago and more, they remind us of the aesthetic spirit of the Western Chalukyas.

From the time of the Mughals until today, Uluberia, a small town on the banks of the River Hooghly in the Howrah district of West Bengal, has been home to Zardozi and Arri embroiderers. Their beautiful work in gold and silver metal has withstood the stresses and strains of time and survived, becoming a significant contribution to India’s craft heritage.


Powadas are essentially songs that tell tales of royal valour. Sung mainly during the times of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwas they survive today, echoing the heroic spirit of a long gone age.
